Since 2007, when the National Library of Ireland started a major project to digitise our glass plate negatives, more than 65,000 photographs of Ireland and Irish life have been made available online.

They offer unique insights into life across the island of Ireland from the middle of the 19th century all the way up to the late 20th century. You can explore these images on our catalogue.

While our buildings were closed during 2020, we initiated a campaign called ‘Around the Island’, highlighting the availability of historic photographs for every county on the island.  Every week we shared a specially created video for each county.  This encouraged people across the island of Ireland to connect and reconnect with their particular county and their history by accessing digitised photographs readily available through our rich and varied online collections.
