Four national libraries across Ireland and the United Kingdom have launched a collaboration to widen public access to their collections and deepen research ties between their institutions.

The National Library of Ireland, the National Library of Scotland, the National Library of Wales and the British Library are the institutions behind the partnership Across These Islands: Shared Histories, Shared Futures, announced on Friday, 13 March 2026.

The project has been awarded €750,000 through the UK-Ireland Cultural Co-operation Programme, part of a broader €5 million investment in Ireland-UK cultural initiatives. The announcement was made in Cork by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport Patrick O'Donovan, and Minister for Creative Industries, Media and Arts Ian Murray.

The four libraries collectively safeguard the printed and recorded heritage of their nations. The partnership builds on existing relationships between the institutions and creates a shared programme to help people discover the stories, languages and cultures that link these islands across time.

Work will run across three areas: joint programming and curation, including shared exhibitions, digital experiences and public events; professional exchange between staff; and joint research and policy work covering digital discovery, sustainability, ethics, inclusion, climate transition and the responsible use of AI.

Over four years, the partnership will develop shared discovery frameworks, community advisory panels, and multilingual and accessible content to support broader public engagement and ensure that people everywhere can explore the collections and stories that connect these islands.

Dr Audrey Whitty, Director of the National Library of Ireland, said: "This collaboration allows us to share stories that cross borders, deepen understanding and create new vibrant ways for people to engage with our respective national collections."

Dr Rhodri Llwyd Morgan, Chief Executive of the National Library of Wales, said: "This partnership celebrates the cultural and linguistic diversity of these islands while widening access to Welsh heritage and voices."

Amina Shah, National Librarian and Chief Executive of the National Library of Scotland, said: "Our shared histories are so intrinsic to our culture that many of us living in these islands might be unaware of how deep they truly are. Working together will help us bring these stories to life for more people in more places."

Dr Jeremy Silver, Interim Chief Executive of the British Library, said: "By aligning our expertise in digital access and innovation, we can strengthen research, creativity and public engagement across all four nations."
