‘I thought of her as the wishing tree…’

Celebrate the spirit of St Patrick’s season by turning to Ireland’s rich folklore at Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again!

Inspired by Seamus Heaney’s poem ‘The Wishing Tree’, this relaxed, beginner-friendly workshop invites you to decorate the poem using simple printing techniques, using scraps of fabric and lace to create delicate images. In the poem, Heaney recalls an old Irish custom: tying rags, or clooties, to hawthorn trees near holy wells, calling on the fairies to grant a heartfelt wish.

While we can’t promise that your wishes will come true, you’ll leave with a beautiful handmade print and a renewed appreciation for one of Ireland’s greatest poets and the traditions that inspired his work. We’ll provide the tools - you bring the wish!
