A stylized, realistic painting of a young Seamus Heaney with short dark hair seated at a small table covered with a white tablecloth. He wears a dark ribbed sweater and looks straight ahead with a serious, neutral expression. His hands rest on an open book. Behind him, a window reveals dense green foliage with several birds partially hidden among the leaves. The scene is quiet and introspective, rendered in muted tones with fine, detailed textures.

          Edward McGuire (1932–1986), Ulster Museum

          In Person

Join us as we explore the painted layers of Seamus Heaney through portraiture past and present.

This talk examines how artists who knew, studied, or were inspired by Heaney's work captured his presence in portraiture. From early depictions to later, more reflective works, this talk traces a visual journey through Heaney's life—revealing how each artist approached not just his appearance, but his personality, character and mind.

Featuring works by Edward McGuire, Barrie Cooke, Louis le Brocquy and more, we will showcases a wide range of artistic styles. Expect everything from finely detailed drawings to bold, expressive paintings, as well as sculpture and printmaking. Together, these works—spanning oil, charcoal, mixed media and more—offer a rich and varied portrait of one of Ireland’s most influential poets.

Discover anew the intersection of art and poetry at Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again on Saturday 30th at 2pm

            In Person

"Strange, it is a huge nothing that we fear"

Join us at Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again Saturday 24th May at 2pm for a fascinating talk from Dr Rosie Lavan of Trinity College Dublin on Seamus Heaney’s first and most beloved collection, Death of a Naturalist, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of its publication.

Death of a Naturalist gained fame for Heaney as he movingly describes his journey from innocence to experience and from his rural upbringings in Co. Derry to the urban world of Belfast. Dr Lavan will discuss the book’s journey towards publication, looking at how some of Heaney’s most cherished poems – including ‘Digging’, ‘Twice Shy’ and ‘Death of a Naturalist’ – made their first appearances in British magazines including the New Statesman and Vogue, where they can be found in some intriguing contexts. To do so, she will draw on some of the most special items in our collection, such as the letter from Faber & Faber telling Heaney that Death of a Naturalist had been accepted for publication.

“If poetry and the arts do anything, they can fortify your inner life, your inwardness.”

Join us on Saturday 9th May at 2pm for a guided tour of the vibrant visual art on display as part of the Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again exhibition.

As we brush through the visual art displayed throughout the space, we will paint a picture of Seamus Heaney’s relationship with artists and the ways in which his poetry impacted and influenced the world of visual art. With almost twenty visual artists represented in the exhibition, each expresses unique yet universally accessible aspects that permeate Heaney’s work: themes of heritage, homeplace, connection and community.

Featuring both contemporary figures such as Dimitri Hadzi and Barrie Cooke who worked closely with the poet, and those he never had the opportunity to meet including Maser and James Dodds this tour encounters artists Heaney befriended, collaborated and inspired.

Journeying across continents and a wide spectrum of media, this tour enriches understanding of Seamus Heaney as an advocate for the arts in all its many forms.
