Join us for lecture by Daniel Carey during the Dublin Festival of History.
The Standard newspaper was the semi-official ‘voice’ of Catholic Ireland for fifty years (1928-1978). It claimed a weekly circulation of 80,000, and staunchly defended Catholic Church policy in every political, social, and cultural debate for half a century.
This lecture will examine the paper’s position in some key battlegrounds – including censorship, the Mother and Child Scheme, free education and communism.

Daniel Carey, based at the School of Communications in DCU, is conducting postdoctoral research on The Standard with funding from Research Ireland. He will share insights from his research at the National Library exploring the paper’s 2,600 back issues.
