Legacy in the Library is a new annual series at the National Library of Ireland. It pays tribute to Irish literary figures who have died in the preceding year, focusing on their holdings in the National Library’s collections. Their families are central to these tributes.
For our third instalment of the 2025 Legacy in the Library series we celebrate author, playwright, broadcaster Nell McCafferty. Nell will be remembered by her sister Carmel McCafferty and niece and literary executor Muire McCallion, in conversation with Dr Sinéad McCoole, NLI Head of Exhibitions, Learning and Programming. The evening will focus on Nell’s literary legacy and will feature exclusive footage of her home and archive.
A reception will be held at 6:30pm, with the event following at 7pm.

Carmel McCafferty is an actor from Derry City. She is the only known survivor of an assassination attempt by Nell McCafferty. She is also her sister.

Muire McCallion is also an actor from Derry City. Known most recently as her Astronaut, she is the niece of Nell McCafferty. She gets her height from her aunt.
