Board and Director

With effect from 3 May 2005, the National Library of Ireland was established as an autonomous National Cultural Institution under the provisions of the National Cultural Institutions Act 1997, with a Board and a Director (Chief Executive).

The Board

Under the National Cultural Institutions Act 1997, the Board will comprise a Chairperson and not less than 9 or more than 11 ordinary members.

The principal functions of the Board of the Library are:
 to conserve, restore, maintain and enlarge the library material in the collection of the Library for the benefit of the public and to establish and maintain a record of library material (including material relating to the Irish language) in relation to Ireland and to contribute to the provision of access by members of the public to material relating to other countries.

The Board once appointed, establish in accordance with the provisions of the National Cultural Institutions Act 1997, two statutory Board Committees, reporting to the Board. These include the Readers Advisory Committee and the Committee on Genealogy and Heraldry. The Director

The Director of the National Library of Ireland is Dr Sandra Collins.

The functions of the Director of the Library are to:

carry on and manage and control generally the administration and business of the
Library and perform such other functions as may be determined by the Board of the Library.
