Main and Manuscripts Reading Rooms open again on Mondays

Normal Monday opening of the Main Reading Room and the Manuscripts Reading Room (from 09.30 - 19.45) has resumed from Monday 30 September 2019.

Readers can order items for access on Mondays as previously. Please note that 24 hour advance ordering is required for items consulted in the Manuscripts Reading Room. Up to 30 items per day can be ordered for Mondays, with orders for Monday morning to be placed before 11:30am on the preceding Saturday. Orders received after this time will not be available until 2pm on Monday. More information on ordering is available here

The Monday closures, which ran from 2017, allowed NLI staff to prepare for the move of 350,000 books, newspapers and periodicals from unsuitable Victorian storage and undertake other collection care work. This work, Phase 1 of the National Library's capital development plan, is now complete.

The coming phases will include investigative works in the Library’s West Wing, an application for planning permission, and the development of new public spaces and services, as well as ensuring universal access for all visitors. The NLI will remain open throughout, minimising disruption to its services for readers and visitors.
