NLI Director to take up new role with UCD Library

Dr Sandra Collins, the current Director of the National Library of Ireland, has been appointed to the role of University Librarian at University College Dublin, and will take up the role on 21 st March 2022.

Dr Collins holds a PhD in nonlinear fluid dynamics from UCD, and after a successful career in academia, applied research, research funding, and as the founding Director of the Digital Repository of Ireland, she was appointed as Director of the National Library in July 2015.

Dr Collins said “25 years ago I completed my PhD in UCD and I am delighted now to be returning to the University where I learnt so much, and I relish the prospect of working with the global community of students and staff in the university. During my time as Director of the National Library of Ireland, a particular highlight was the partnership project with UCD to create the Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI). Alongside this landmark collaboration, it was my privilege to lead the organisation through a particularly successful strategy period.

‘The capital development of the Victorian main building on Kildare Street; and the opening of the exhibition Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again at the new Bank of Ireland Cultural and Heritage Centre on Westmoreland Street in 2018; major acquisitions including Edna O’Brien and Neil Jordan’s papers; extensive digitisation and digital collecting programmes; a key role in the Decade of Centenaries programme – I have been delighted to share these achievements and many others with my colleagues at the National Library. It was an incredible honour to serve as Director, during seven happy, fulfilling and inspiring years, and I look forward to all the possibilities of the next chapter working with the exceptional team at the UCD Library.”

Chairperson of the National Library, Eoin McVey, said “I would like to thank Sandra for her commitment to the National Library and commend the many achievements of the 2016-2021 Strategy. It has been a pleasure working with her and I wish her every success in her new role. The Board and I look forward to continuing the great successes of the NLI in the next strategy period, and particularly the completion of the major capital development project.”

Deputy Director of the National Library, Katherine McSharry, will take up the role of Acting Director in March 2022 and a recruitment campaign to fill the Director role will take place in due course.
