Talk: Irish Christmas Folklore, Customs and Traditions

Thursday, 9 December 7pm

Speaker: Michael Fortune,

Join artist/folklorist Michael Fortune for a special online presentation where he looks at Christmas from a uniquely Irish perspective.

Delving into Michael’s wealth of research and knowledge, this talk will introduce you to first hand source customs and traditions found around the country from Christmas mumming plays and carols, to the keeping of pieces of straw from the Christmas crib and or burning last year’s Christmas holly.

Michael has worked with the NLI on various research projects here since 2009. In 2017 he organised two conferences on Hallowe’en and May folklore in Ireland and we are delighted to welcome Michael back (virtually) for this seasonal presentation.

He runs the online resource, and has recently produced a publication of Irish folklore calendar dates. If you haven’t seen or heard of Michael’s work before, prepare to be enthused, excited, informed and entertained by Ireland’s leading light in the area of folklore and folk-culture.
