Over the past decade, Mr McVey has supported the NLI through a period of steady change, helping to guide its role as Ireland's memory keeper and as a leading cultural institution.
Patrick O’Donovan TD, Minister for the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, said:
"The Minister wishes to thank Eoin McVey for his dedicated service as Chair of the National Library of Ireland. His contribution reflects a clear commitment to public service and to the care of a national cultural institution of enduring importance."
Mr McVey said:
"It has been a great privilege to be part of the National Library of Ireland over the past ten years, and especially to serve as Chair of the Board. I’m proud of what we achieved during that time, from redeveloping two key research spaces, the Art Room and the Manuscripts Reading Room, to opening the new, state-of-the-art Joly Lecture Theatre, all of which have greatly improved these beautiful public spaces.
It is exciting to have received planning permission for the redevelopment of the West Wing which will transform the NLI making it a vibrant public facility welcoming all. This major capital undertaking is essential to the future of the Library, as it will deliver universal access to the national collections and create exciting new spaces for all visitors.
There are undoubtedly challenges ahead, including constrained budgets and staffing levels, but I believe the future looks bright for the National Library of Ireland.
I have been fortunate to work with committed colleagues, staff and partners, and I leave with enormous respect for this vital national cultural institution confident in its future."
Dr Audrey Whitty, Director of the National Library of Ireland, commented:
"Eoin has been a thoughtful and highly expert Chair, bringing calm leadership, sound judgement and a strong sense of public service to the role. It has been a pleasure to work with him realising our shared vision for the National Library of Ireland. Eoin has supported the National Library of Ireland and its team in delivering its mission to collect, protect and make accessible the recorded memory of Ireland. I am enormously grateful for his commitment, time and always wise counsel."
