‘The first fold first, then more foldovers drawn…’
This Valentine’s workshop invites you to slow down and spend intentional time with words, inspired by love poems of Seamus Heaney.
Heaney was a devoted letter writer, at a time when correspondence meant sitting with a page, choosing words carefully, and trusting paper to carry feeling across distance.
In this relaxed Valentine’s workshop, you are invited to write a letter for someone special: a significant other, a friend, a family member, someone you care about, or even yourself! Your words will be written into a folded origami letter so it can be opened step by step to reveal your message, using short lines from Heaney as inspiration along the way.
There is no right or wrong way to take part. You might write a few words, a full letter, or even draw instead. No previous experience is needed, all materials are provided, and all forms of love are welcome!
Folded into a neat square, the letter begins quietly, its words and images held within.
Lifting the outer flaps begins the unfolding, offering a first glimpse inside.
As the folds open in turn, more of the letter appears, guiding the eye across the page.
Handwritten words and decorative motifs come into view, adding intimacy and care.
With most of the folds released, the paper expands and the overall form becomes clear.
Unfolded completely, the letter forms a square, revealing the central illustration at its centre.
