As part of its ongoing commitment to regional engagement beyond its Dublin campus, the Board of the National Library of Ireland (NLI) held its June 2025 meeting in Belfast.

Thanks to the generous support of Queen’s University Librarian, Jane O’Neill, a hybrid Board meeting took place in The McClay Library on Thursday, 26th June. Following the meeting, the Board was given a guided tour of the award-winning library, which features IT training rooms, a Language Centre, study and support spaces, a café, and the University’s renowned Special Collections and the C.S. Lewis Reading Room. A curated display of collection highlights was also presented by Deirdre Wildy, Head of Special Collections and Archives.

On the evening prior, Wednesday, 25th June, the Board visited the Ulster Museum, one of four sites of National Museums NI. With thanks to Chairperson Gordan Milligan OBE and Chief Executive Kathryn Thomson for their hospitality, the Board enjoyed an expert-led tour by William Blair, Director of Collections. The museum’s five floors showcase  rich and diverse exhibitions in art, history, and natural sciences.

During their time in Belfast, the Board was pleased to meet Professor Richard Miles, Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast, as well as Julie Andrews, Director, and Samantha McCombe, Librarian of The Linen Hall. A courtesy visit was also made to The Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s.

This meeting continues the Board’s recent series of regional engagements, following gatherings in Galway (2023) and Cork (2024). These visits reflect the NLI’s broader remit and dedication to fostering inclusive, all-island collaboration. The Board looks forward to deepening partnerships and developing new shared initiatives as a result of its Belfast engagement.
