Join NLI archivists Joanne Carroll and Nora Thornton as they delve once again into the recipe collections held within the NLI.
The success of the Cooking The Books talk last year showed that there was an enormous interest in early cooking techniques, food and recipes and although the talk gave a good overview of the collections, there wasn’t time to explore any particular subject in detail. In Cooking the Books Part II, Joanne will focus more on the cures and remedies that are very often found within manuscripts of culinary recipes. Nora will do a more in-depth analysis of her favourite culinary manuscript, MS 42,009. There will also be a focus, not just on tripe but on other less popular ingredients that aren’t in as much use today. Who knows, perhaps tripe can be made popular again…

Nora Thornton began working in the NLI as a Library Assistant in 2009. She is now an Assistant Keeper in the Special Collections Department working with the photographic collections in the NPA. She has always loved baking and history and as a “retired” archaeologist is also interested in the experimental side of learning about the past. Her favourite MS 42,009 contains a very versatile recipe for Parsnip Pudding which can be made either savoury or sweet.

Joanne Carroll began working in the NLI in 2016 and is Assistant Keeper in the Manuscripts Department working on the cataloguing and digitisation of archive collections, including the Liam O’Leary Archive, the Band Aid Archive and most recently the Yeats Occult Papers. She is a keen foodie who loves talking about food and trying new things to eat.
