Chinese Characters Past and Present

Talk followed by a workshop:  In preparation for Chinese New Year The Open University in association with the National Library is celebrating with a free, fun talk and interactive workshop entitled ‘Chinese Characters Past and Present’ at the National Library of Ireland.

Presented by Ximena Arias-McLaughlin, Head of The Open University Languages Faculty in Ireland, the talk will explore the ways in which Chinese characters were written in the past. Ximena will also discuss the evolution of Chinese characters and how computer and mobile technology have transformed the handling of characters.

The talk is followed by a short interactive workshop, with the chance to type characters on an iPad or smart phone using The Open University’s Chinese Characters First Steps App.
