Images of Erin in the Age of Parnell

20 October 2000 - 31 March 2001
Main Building, Kildare Street.

Featuring a selection of images from the Library's rich collection of nineteenth century political cartoons, the exhibition Images of Erin in the Age of Parnell  opened in the Library's Kildare Street premises on 20 October 2000. The exhibition coincided with the launch of a book of the same title by Professor L Perry Curtis Jr.

"Rejoice, Oh! Greatly". Erin at the Queen's Jubile"Rejoice, Oh! Greatly". Erin at the Queen's Jubile

The Prints and Drawings Department in the Library contains a wide variety of material, often unexpected and always interesting. Among the most colourful collections are the late nineteenth century cartoons that were the subject matter of this exhibition. Although the iconic image of Erin or Hibernia has a long history, the golden age of graphic images of this beautiful, young, and virtuous epitome of Ireland, really belongs to the last third of the nineteenth century, when a number of talented Irish artists and illustrators were at work in Dublin.

The exhibition ran until the end of March 2001; Professor Curtis' book is available from the NLI Shop.
