The Library holds a collection of general maps of Ireland, from the late sixteenth century onwards, many of them in printed atlases. There are also many maps illustrating printed books which are searchable by the name of the cartographer or the name of the county or town in the Card Index to Maps in the main Reading Room. They include such diverse items as Taylor and Skinner's maps of the roads of Ireland from 1777; navigation plans of the river Lagan by Robert Whitworth; a map by John O'Donovan of the circuit of Muircheartach MacNeill; maps of the Leinster coal field which appear in an issue of Transactions of the Civil Engineers; geological maps; and maps which were drawn for inclusion in tourist handbooks such as The Pictorial Handbook to Carlingford Bay and Watering Places in its Vicinity (1846).
