This relatively small collection comprising less than 200 photographs is a very important addition to the Library’s photographic collection due to its content and style. J.J. Clarke took the photographs while he was a medical student in Dublin between 1897 and 1904.

The photographs were taken in and around Westmoreland Street, Grafton Street, Merrion Square and St. Stephen’s Green, but these locations are merely backdrops, Clarke was more interested in people than buildings. They have been catalogued and digitised and are available online through the Online Catalogue. A selection of the photographs featured in an exhibition entitled Dubliners during 2001.
