Social, Economic and Labour History

The labour and trade union movements are represented by the papers of Thomas Johnson and William O’Brien. The papers of Sir Thomas Aiskew Larcom, Under Secretary for Ireland (1853-68), provide information on such areas as education, policing and civil order, the censuses of 1841 and 1846, agriculture and fisheries, antiquities, meteorology, mining, communications, the Poor Law, famine relief, emigration, public health and religious institutions. There are also a considerable number of business archives which include the archives of the Prior-Wandesforde Collieries in Co. Kilkenny dating from the seventeenth century, and those of Locke’s Distillery in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath.
