World War I Recruiting Posters

This collection consists of over 60 Irish and British recruiting posters from World War I. These colourful and bold posters urged Irish and British men to join the war effort with slogans such as “Your first duty is to take your part in ending the war”, “An appeal to gallant Irishmen: Join an Irish regiment today” and “Daddy, what did you do in the Great War?”.

As the war progressed the recruitment poster became an increasingly sophisticated means of propaganda; posters in Ireland ceased to be merely local versions of those produced in Britain and began to directly target Irish sensitivities and interests, such as the plight of Belgium and the acceleration of Home Rule. Even the iconic image of Lord Kitchener appealing for troops had an Irish counterpart in John Redmond.
