Rights and Reproductions

All persons wishing to publish material from NLI collections will need to seek the National Library’s permission before reproduction.

Publication includes material to be reproduced in books, magazines, journals, newspapers, brochures, web (even when the images are already available on the NLI website), broadcasting on television, DVD or any other medium.

Where copyright exists and is not held by the National Library, the publisher must also obtain the copyright holder’s permission for reproduction.

Fees are per image, and one time use only, except where stated.

Requesting permission to publish

1. Contact copy-orders to request a digital copy to be made of the image.

2. Complete and sign the Permission Request Form and scan and email to permissions@nli.ie or post to Glenn Dunne, National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2.  For permission to reproduce or quote from the manuscript collection please scan and email the completed form to jharte2@nli.ie or post to James Harte, Manuscripts Department, National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2.

3. An administration fee will apply where full details of the image(s) for which permission is requested are not supplied.

4. If the item is in copyright, you will need (and it is your responsibility) to obtain written permission of the copyright owner who may request the payment of a further fee (in addition to the fee paid to the NLI). This written permission must be supplied with the completed Permission Request Form.

5. The Library will issue an invoice for the appropriate fee. You can pay with your credit card by telephoning +353 1 6030 214 or by cheque or postal order marked payable to National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2. Please quote your invoice number when making a payment.

6. A letter confirming the grant of permission will issue within 10 working days of payment of the appropriate fee.

7. Where permission is applied for after publication, an additional charge of 50% will apply.
