A maximum of 5 printed items (for example, books, journal issues, or microfilm reels) and 3 manuscript items or 3 rare books, can be ordered for each delivery time. If more than 5 printed items or 3 manuscript items are requested, the additional material will be reserved for subsequent delivery times.
As some items can only be consulted in the Manuscripts Reading Room, or by appointment in the Prints & Drawings Department and NPA Reading Room, it is essential that you check the location of the material in the catalogue record under View In before your visit to the Library.
Certain items are also stored offsite and this is indicated by Offsite (Special Access) under View In in the catalogue record. These items must be requested before 2pm on Wednesday for delivery to the Main Reading Room on Friday.
Readers' ticket numbers are numeric only.
All material except Catholic parish registers, Tithe Applotment Books and newspapers on microfilm require a reader's ticket to view.
If you do not have a reader’s ticket, you may still place your order but you will need to apply for one in the Main Reading Room when you arrive.
Anyone over 16 years of age may apply for a reader's ticket. Please bring current photographic ID with you e.g. passport, driver's licence, student card.
Readers' tickets are valid for a period of three years and give readers access to all collections.

Journal/Serial
A journal or serial is any publication which is produced periodically. It includes academic journals, newsletters and magazines. You can find journals/serials in the catalogue.
Manuscripts
A maximum of 3 manuscript items can be ordered per delivery.
Manuscripts are items such as letters, diaries and deeds, etc. You can find manuscripts in Sources and in the catalogue.
Newspapers
Newspapers are any newspapers included in the newspaper database. Please note that where a microfilm is available a hardcopy will not be issued.
Musical Scores
Musical Scores have a call number which identifies each individual item. You will find an item's call number in the catalogue record.
Books
Books and pamphlets have a call number which identifies each individual item. You will find an item's call number in the catalogue record.
Journals/Serials
Journals and serials have a call number which identifies each individual title. You will find the call number in the catalogue record. Plaese also include the volume(s) and issue(s) you require. A maximum of 5 volumes/issues will be delivered to you at each delivery time.
Manuscripts
A maximum of 3 manuscript items can be ordered per delivery.
Manuscripts are the original papers of private individuals, political parties, associations and corporations and can consist of items such as letters, diaries, deeds and maps. Examples of NLI Manuscript call numbers are "MS 33,911"; "G 20"; "21 F 115"; "D 1,540"; and "GO 223".

Newspapers
Please enter the title of the newspaper you require. Please enter the date of the issue required in place of a callnumber.
A maximum of five reels per delivery time will be delivered to you.
The Irish Newspaper Archives provides online access to 25 newspapers, in addition to the Irish Times digital archive, both of which are available for consultaion at the National Library.
The newspaper record in the Newspaper Databases indicates those titles that are available digitally.
Please note that if microfilm or digital formats are available, the hardcopy newspaper is not issued.
Additionally, some newspapers are stored off-site and are subject to a delay in retrieval. These are noted in the Newspaper Databases.
