Extra! Extra! Read all about it: Self Service Newspaper Pilot at NLI
Preparations are being made for a new pilot project to make popular newspaper titles available on open access to users of our Main Reading Room.
Yes, that’s right. This means no more waiting around for your microfilm orders to come to the counter. The Irish Independent newspaper microfilms will now be available in the Microfilm Reading Room (off our Main Reading Room) so you can help yourself to one reel at a time, as you need.
Initially the Irish Independent (1891-June 2011) will be made available. If this pilot proves successful with our readers, we intend to make some of our other most commonly used newspaper titles available on a self service basis too.
While we make our preparations for this project Irish Independent microfilms will be unavailable for a brief temporary period, (Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd of November to be exact) to allow us to move them to their new home in the Reading Room.
In the meantime if you want to access the Irish Independent, you can still do so online using the Irish Newspaper Archive available on all public laptops and PCs in the Main Reading Room and on the Genealogy floor.
We hope that you’ll be as excited about this development as we are. If you have any questions or comments about the new project, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
