Join us for our 140th Birthday Party

On Saturday 12th August we're having a special 140th birthday party celebration  - and we'd love you to join us.

Together with the National Museum, the National Library was founded in 1877, under the Dublin Science and Art Museum Act.  We're delighted to be joining with the Museum to host a programme of family-friendly activities celebrating 140 years of collecting, protecting and sharing the national collections.

At the National Library

From 2 to 5pm on Saturday 12th, you can enjoy free gospel music, pop-up displays and visits to our iconic reading room and award-winning Yeats exhibition. Our younger visitors will be invited to get creative and make birthday cards for the Library, and to join in other arts and crafts activities.  Illustrator and Laureate na nÓg PJ Lynch will join our Director Dr Sandra Collins to cut a special birthday cake, which will be served to the first 500 visitors.

At the National Museum

From 10am to 4pm, the NMI is celebrating the anniversary with a free, family-friendly open day at the National Museum of Ireland – Archaeology on Kildare Street. The celebration will include a number of themed art workshops, a pop-up photographic exhibition and a free 1877-inscribed cupcake for all.

We're looking forward to seeing you!
