Miss Herbert's Sponge Cake: a taste of history through the National Library of Ireland’s manuscript recipes
Studying the history of food in Ireland provides us with a unique insight into the everyday lives of every stratum of Irish society. Peoples’ relationship with food, and how recipes and culinary skills have been circulated and communicated through the centuries, is the focus of the NLI’s upcoming Autumn event series ‘The Kitchen Archive.’
Before the printed cookbook became a standard item in peoples’ kitchens, recipes would often be collected in manuscript cookbooks. Indeed, many homes throughout the country probably have something similar – recipes circulated among friends or passed down through the generations. The NLI holds a number of such manuscript cookbooks dating as far back as the 17th century, many of which were authored by members of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy. Food historian Dorothy Cashman has carried out extensive research of these cookbooks and will discuss her research in her talk 'Miss Herbert's Sponge Cake: A taste of history through the manuscript recipes of the National Library of Ireland'
