Dublin Made Me - Poems of the City

Exploring our capital city through its poetry and song, poet and broadcaster Pat Boran, and Gerard Smyth, poet and Poetry Editor of The Irish Times, present a selection of poems and lyrics, historical and contemporary, famous and less well known, that tell their own story of our capital city.

Adding to this special event, Pat and Gerard will be accompanied by an Irish musician playing lyrics from well-known Dublin songs.

Pat Boran has published five collections of poems, most recently The Next Life (2012), and his New and Selected Poems (2007) has been translated into a number of languages. In addition to poetry he has published fiction for adults and children, and his non-fiction work includes A Short History of Dublin (2000) and The Invisible Prison, his memoir of growing up in the midlands. He was a co-editor of Dublin 15 (1997), a CD of poems relating to Dublin city, and for many years has presented The Poetry Programme on RTE Radio 1. His awards include the Patrick Kavanagh Award and the Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Award for Poetry. He is a member of Aosdána.

Gerard Smyth has been publishing poetry since the late 1960s, his first collection appearing when he was just 18 years old. He is the author of six collections of poetry, the most recent of which are A New Tenancy (2004), The Mirror Tent (2007) and The Fullness of Time: New and Selected Poems (2010). For many years Managing Editor at The Irish Times, he is now that paper’s Poetry Editor. He is the 2012 recipient of the Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Award for Poetry in the US and a member of Aosdána.
