The Fifth Province: County Societies in Irish America – Exhibition Launch
The Fifth Province: County Societies in Irish America – Exhibition launch
Thursday, 4 July at 6.30pm
Minister Deenihan will open The Fifth Province: County Societies in Irish America, a travelling banner-based exhibition from Glucksman Ireland House at New York University, on Thursday 4 July at 6.30 pm, in the front hall of the NLI. The opening will be followed by a public discussion between the two exhibition curators.
Curated by Dr Marion Casey and Dr Miriam Nyhan, the exhibition celebrates the lifetime commitment many Irish men and women made to their Irish heritage through membership in a county society in the US. These dynamic societies provided benevolent, protective, and fraternal sustenance for Irish immigrants from the late 1840s. At the same time, a strong county connection nurtured and helped preserve identity for the next generation. As Senator John F. Kennedy remarked at the Irish Institute in New York in January 1957, “Whether we live in Cork or in Boston, in New York or in Sydney, we are all members of a great family which is linked together by that strongest of chains, a common past.”
