The Library aims to collect and make available all printed books of Irish interest; that is to say, all books published in Ireland; all books by Irish authors (regardless of subject matter); and all books containing subject matter of Irish interest. Under legal deposit legislation, the Library is entitled to receive a copy of every printed item published in the Republic of Ireland. Material published in Northern Ireland is purchased, as is material published abroad.
"Brush Work" by EC Yeats, London, 1896 (LO 4508).
Some material is also acquired through donation. The Library acquires both current and out-of-print books. The collection of printed books consists of around one million items covering a wide variety of subjects. The present-day acquisitions policy is to specialize in material of Irish interest.
The Library’s collection is for reference in the reading rooms only. Books are not available on loan.
