Sorry that we had to drive you to the lengths of heading up into your attic, and I'm glad you didn't do yourself a mischief! :) I'm assuming you're correct and that the Mad Hatter should also be "on his head" as well as "back to front" - will bear that in mind for any future reconstructions...

This is how it should look in the picture of the projector.
http://photopol.com/pics/madhatter_2.jpg

In other words, the slide as currently shown, but rotated by 180 degrees.

Had to get my projector out of the attic to sort that one out..

OK. But if you are showing it as it would have been inserted in the projector rather than how it appeared on the screen/wall when projected, then surely it should also be upsidedown?

Well spotted and you're right in theory, Pól, but these glass lantern slides were projected onto a wall or screen, so had to be "backwards". I deliberately didn't flip this slide of the Mad Hatter's Tea Party as that's how the slide appeared in the slide holder (have a look at the image of the slide projector)...

I think the Madhatter is backwards. His hat is actually 10/6 and the majority of the participants, and those for whom the remaining places are set, are actually right handed.

To Avice-Claire,
That's interesting about the connection with General Roberts. Unfortunately, we cannot remember the name of the man who gave my father the collection. He was unmarried, and felt that it would find a more suitable home in a family setting, with plenty of children about the place to view it! Perhaps someone out there may come up with a suggestion about the mystery person! Regards, Deirdre

Hi Nli,

Love the Blog. Really interesting stuff. I especially like the Golden Vale Cheese touch. lol. Hard to believe that technology has surged forward so much in recent years. You are doing great work in preserving chunks of our heritage so that it can be studied and enjoyed by future generations. Curating all that stuff is so important. How could we know where we are going if we do not know where we came from? That's where Nli come is with such an excellent window into so many aspects of our past. Really well done. Keep up the good work.

This is such an interesting and amazing blog because there is also another connection between the National Library of Ireland and Earl Roberts. I have a ring in my possession which was originally given to my great-great grandmother Avice Daly née Nugent by her friend Nora Bews who went on to become the wife of Lord Frederick Roberts. Avice Daly was a lady companion to Lady Roberts in India. The two women were very close and both had daughters called Aileen. Avice Daly also called another daughter Nora after Lady Roberts. The connection with the Roberts has its origins in Passage East, County Waterford, where Earl Roberts’ grandfather John Roberts was a rector and Avice Daly’s father Zachariah LeForet Butler Nugent was born. It is a small world indeed.
