Dear Peter
My wife Lucy Russell is the granddaughter of your great aunt Meriel Eleanor Russell née Fetherstonhaugh.
I have catalogued my wife's ancestry and posted it here: www.ancestorsearch.co.uk
I am keen to obtain photos of any portraits that might exist of Meriel's Fetherstonhaugh ancestors. I only have pictures of her, of her parents, and of her grandmother Lucy (née Wingfield), and her great-grandmother Eleanor (née Howard).
Do you (or anyone else reading this) know if any other portraits existed, and where they or photos of them might now be?

I have lineages connecting me to the 'Lambert's of Castle Ellen, Galway, Eire with documentary proofs. Captain Peter Lambert B. circa 1787 - d. 1844 of Castle Ellen and latterly of Fortick's Grove, Dublin, is one of my Great. Gt.- Gt. Grandfathers. ..Also of his son Stubbs Lambert b. 1842 - 1908, and his son, Nathaniel. D. Lambert b. about 1862 - d. about 1934 of Caernarvonshire. NORTH Wales. Much earlier, in the very early 1800's two Lambert daughters were married to sons of the neighbouring Featherstonhaugh family. Coincidently T. E. Lawrence was born in North Wales also. ..needless to say his home, place of birth, still stands occupied today, as indeed now, does Castle Ellen..named after Ellen nee Tubbs, wife of Walter Lambert..

My mother was a Fetherstonhaugh, posthumous daughter of Ashley. When my father , James McCarthy, died in the early '70's, Bracklyn was sold and all the family papers donated to the National Library.
The Fetherstonhaughs married into the Nugents so Bracklyn ( The Irish for 'Speckled Meadow') was in our family for nearly exactly 800 years.

I read this very good post a few days ago and today I came across a passage in 'Palette and plough' by Lennox Robinson, a biography of Limerick artist Dermod O'Brien (1865-1945), which seems very fit:

'Sixty-five years later - 1913 to be exact- his grandson Dermod [O'Brien] in letter after letter to his wife rails against the stupidity, the selfishness, the non-Irishness of his Kildare-Street-Club landlord friends. Their ostrich attitude prevents them from seeing that Home Rule is inevitable and that even if they think it a bad job it is their duty as Irishmen to try make it a better one.'

Just thought it was very interesting!

Thanks for these accounts - representative, in that the great majority of Irish people experienced the events of 1916 at second hand, though their ultimate response of course varied. I was particularly interested in the glimpse in West's letter of SF activity in the Bray area and on the east coast prior to the Rising.
